About LC Blues

We are a small home breeder of BLUE Great Danes - All Blue and only Blue Danes. Our Danes are raised in the home and treated as loving members of our family. We are new to breeding Danes, but had several years of experience breeding Weimaraners, with much success and many positive testimonials. However, now we breed only blue Great Danes.

Joan, our AKC registered female and dam, is OFA tested for eyes (normal), heart (normal), thyroid (normal), hips (good), elbows (normal), patella (normal) and ankles (normal). She is an American Great Dane. We’re hoping that since she is a bit smaller than her European counterparts that we will have the pleasure of her company longer. She is a svelte 120 pounds and is a true love bug!! Joan comes with exceptional confirmation. Joan is an AKC “Canine Good Citizen” and she is a certified service dog. Joan is raised as a house dog with her “brother” Lenny, a neutered Mantle Great Dane.

The sire of this litter is Ghost of Rebel Danes. Ghost  is a dock diving champion. Ghost has earned his DC, CGC, TKN, and his DSA with many other titles after his name. Ghost is also OFA tested for eyes (normal), heart (normal), thyroid (normal), hips (good), elbows (normal), patella (normal) and ankles (normal) He's athletic, has a great personality with no aggression issues.

Our delightful puppies, with exceptional confirmation, temperament, health, and sweet, playful personalities are looking for their forever homes! Please understand that we screen new owners to ensure that there is an excellent Dane-human match!

Your Great Dane will grow from approximately 15 pounds when you bring them home to 125+ by their first birthday. They will usually add muscle mass during their second year, although some Danes remain very close to their first year height and weight. While Great Danes are known as being the gentle giants, they do require at least one good walk every day, in addition to a backyard for them to relieve themselves. They are affectionate and try extremely hard to please you and will enjoy being part of your pack. They learn well and do great with training. They get along well with other animals and these puppies have been handled and loved. Although Great Danes are big animals, they do make exceptional couch potatoes and do surprisingly well as apartment dwellers. They do have loud, strong barks which they use to let others know “they are on the job.” Joan is also rather vocal and will sympathize with you if you’re complaining or laughing with friends or family. She loves to socialize and does have a lot to say occasionally, including a particular call to let you know she needs to relieve herself. A Great Dane has a short coat, but can be known to do a spring and autumn shed. They do require some brushing, but mostly because they love the grooming attention. You will find your Great Dane to be a formidably loyal companion!

Our puppies are sold on a spay/neuter contract. We recommend that you spay or neuter your Dane between 12-18 months old. Some people choose to wait until 24 months, to ensure that their growth is complete; we require you to wait until your Dane is a minimum of 12 months old.

Specific dogs may have full registration, if show or breed quality, which requires an additional fee. We prefer our AKC registered puppies to go to loving homes and live the comfortable life of your best friend. The puppies are dewormed, have dew claws removed and are up to date on all shots (and you will be given a health record for your continued care with your veterinarian.) Your puppy will come with a sample of Royal Canin dry dog food, which we recommend you continue to feed. Or you can use it to help transfer your dog to another formula. Your puppy will also go home with a toy and a cloth that smells like their Mama to help with initial overnight adjustment.

Our puppies are raised in a family friendly environment. Since they were born, they have regular daily exposure to children and adults alike, as well as other dogs. They are kept together in a large gated, comfy enclosure and should adjust to crate training easily. They have had collars on since birth and have had some limited training with walking on leash. They all potty on a pad, as well as being taken out into the yard to explore and receive praise for going to the potty outside. However, they will probably be 10-12 weeks old before they are completely potty trained.

Make sure to bring your puppy to your personal vet within 5 days of bringing your puppy home. You can show your vet your health records and up to date vaccinations, which  you should continue to ensure your puppy’s continued health.

Our puppies come with a health guarantee. To the best of our breeding and knowledge, our puppies are perfectly healthy, truly loved and socialized. We will guarantee your puppy has good hips and guarantee against genetic hip dysplasia for the first 24 months of your Dane’ life. At 24 month, your Dane’s hips will receive a rating of Mild or better by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals. Hip X-rays are required to be done at a minimum of 24 months old and you will receive an OFA rating. We had Joan tested at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champagne veterinary hospital and paid approximately $1,100 for this hip evaluation and guarantee. (They also examined her knees/elbows and ankles at the same time).

If your puppy receives a rating of severe or moderate hip dysplasia, your Dane will be considered for a replacement puppy or fully refunded purchase price. Documentation must be in the form of an documented O.F.A. testing hospital (and not your veterinarian) However, your veterinarian must also provide written documentation that your dog is not and never has been overweight, and has not been over-exercised, especially during the first two years which is a Great Danes maximum growth phase.

Your responsibility as the owner is to keep your Dane thin. Your Dane should have a defined waist (sideview) with a slight definition of ribs. Your Dane especially needs to remain thin between birth and two years old, which is your Danes optimal growth period. Too much weight will add unnecessary stress and strain on a growing puppy.

Additionally, as an owner you must NOT over exercise your puppy. Your puppy should not exercise to the point of exhaustion. Additionally, it should be remembered that your Great Dane is very sensitive to extreme hot and cold weather. Your Dane can and will eventually jump into your vehicle but it is recommended that they do not jump into a hatchback, SUV or truck until they are fully grown at 2 years. Do not take this dog with you if you are on a bike. Do not allow even small children to “ride” your Dane. They cannot pull sleds or any weights. They cannot go jogging with you until after 2 years old and even then they may not like to run that much.  Joan loves to visit the Chicago dog beach as well as to run in the forest preserves.

Ear cropping is another option, although it requires additional expense and careful attention, taping, and bandaging to care for the cropped ears. We hope you will keep your Dane in natural, soft ears, as is done almost exclusively worldwide. Ear cropping will be the new owners responsibility.

We have dog insurance on our Danes through Trupanion. Trupanion insures your dog for any illness or injury and allows you to set your own type of insurance and deductible. We have found this to be a safe guard for a giant breed dog with giant price bills. Trupanion covers everything with the exception of well-care exams and vaccinations.
